Radishes, secrets for planting and growing in your garden or in a flower pot in your balcony

Radish, belongs to the vegetable cultivated for their roots, its characteristic root with a crisp texture and very juicy. Famous as an appetizer, radish is also used in delicious salads, soups and cooks. The radishes are divided according to the growing season, to the radishes we plant in spring and the radishes we plant in autumn. There are many varieties to try with from spicy to sweet taste, long radishes, round radishes, small or larger, as well as various peel colors from white, red, purple to black. The radish grows quite quickly and can be grown relatively easily in both a garden and a flower pot on the balcony. So it is worthwhile to try fresh radishes from our garden and to cultivate varieties that are difficult to find.

Under what conditions do radishes grow?

Radish needs cool, relatively cold weather to grow, with ideal temperatures between 13-19 ° C. It is resistant to low temperatures and frost. Radishes are susceptible to heat, as at high temperatures they show premature flowering, poor root development and a delicate taste. We prefer to plant radishes in sunny places in the fall and semi-sunny places in the spring, depending on the crop area and the planting season. We choose fluffy soil, finely ground, rich in organic matter, so that the underground part of the plant can grow satisfactorily and with good drainage to remove water. To plant radishes in a flower pot, we use a flower pot with a depth of 15-25 cm, depending on the variety of radish, and a fluffy nutrient rich in nutrients and perlite.

How are radishes planted and what preparation do they need?

Radishes are planted with seed in autumn from early September to late November, as well as in late winter, from February to March. When preparing the soil to sow the radishes, we remove the stones and dig to fine-tune the soil. We then incorporate manure and compost in order to enrich it with an organic substance that contributes to better and better quality production. We sprinkle the radishes sparse, over lines, at planting distances of 20-30 cm between the lines and at a depth of 1-2 cm soil. For our convenience, we can mix the radish seed with sand to achieve thinner seed with greater uniformity. If we finally find that there is dense planting, dilute the radishes, keeping them at a distance of 5 cm from each other, to achieve smooth growth and ideal root formation.

Whenever do radishes need to be watered and lubricated?

Radishes thrive in cool soil and require frequent watering. We take care not to allow their surface soil to dry out and adjust the watering frequency according to the rainfall in that period. As far as fertilization is concerned, radishes do not need additional fertilizer since we have integrated manure and compost during planting. In particular, we should avoid nitrogen fertilizer with ammonium fertilizers that lead to excessive foliage growth and burden the growth of turnip.

When is radishes ready for harvest?

Radishes are ready for harvest 1.5–3 months after sowing. Especially small round radishes grow very fast and can be enjoyed in 1.5 months after sowing. The autumn radish planting is harvested from late October to late January. As our radishes lie beneath the ground, it is good to note in our logs when each radish was sown so we know the harvest time. During harvest, after removing the radish from the ground, cut its foliage and put it in the refrigerator immediately for better maintenance.

What are the main diseases and insects that infest radishes?

Radish is attacked by perennial and mildew, two fungal diseases that cause spots on the leaves of the plant. To treat them, dust with thiohalcine or spray with copper and thiourea liquid. Also, meligra creates curls on the young leaves of radish. To treat it, we spray it with a solution of crushed green soap or other ecological ways described in detail in the article on the treatment of migraine. In addition, it is advisable to throw ash around the radishes to deal with snails and slugs that pierce the leaves.

And one last secret to growing radish

Radishes grow fast and can create successful crops between sprouts, cauliflowers, broccoli, lettuce and beets. Cultivation of plants is an ecological method where we grow different plants in the same area, with multiple benefits.
