General  informations of the Scilla lilio-hyacinthus

The plant belongs to the Liliaceae family and has its origin in the southwest of the European continent. The flowers themselves are the greatest feature or the most striking since it has a purple color. It is for this reason that it is used in gardens with ornamental motifs.

The name that has been given to this plant dates back to Greek mythology which was honored to one of the nymphs of this mythology. It is worth mentioning that the plant is a perennial type which has a very characteristic bulb with a yellow color.

But you have to be careful with the plant itself as it is toxic if you don’t know how to handle it properly. In the same way, when the plant has reached its flowering, it usually attracts various insects that are responsible for pollinating.

In case you are wondering, the Scilla manages to live in environments such as the edges of beech trees or also in forests that are generally humid and have fertile soils. So with this, you will know what you need to give life to this plant in your garden.

Characteristics of the plant

It is a herbaceous plant with perennial characteristics that only reaches a maximum height of 30 cm. The leaves of this plant, like many of the variants that exist, grow in such a way that they are grouped together, forming a basal rosette. The color of the leaves is green.

As with other variations of this species, the flowers of Scilla lilo-Hyacinthus are quite small and have a characteristic light purple color. Although it can turn white, lilac, or light blue.

Care

As you well know, this plant needs an environment that is humid and fertile soil in order to grow. So you have to simulate as much as possible the environment of a mountainous forest.

Similarly, if you meet these conditions, you have to make sure to place the plant in the shade and never in direct sun. If you can place it in a corner, even better. Although you can still play with the other larger plants that you have in your garden since you can plant them under these and give it natural protection.

Earth

As for the land that it needs, it must have a high level of fertility and above all, have a good drainage system. Although it likes humidity, you should avoid puddles at all costs. To plant it directly in the ground, you will have to dig a hole whose dimensions are 50 × 50 cm and use a universal substrate to fill in the hole where the plant will go.

In case you want to have it in a pot, it is also feasible, but you have to use in addition to the substrate, a little volcanic clay or some similar material so that when you do the irrigation, the water can come out quickly and there is no excess water inside the flower pot.

Irrigation

Related to the previous point, irrigation is one of the factors that are always vital in plants, and in this case, irrigation will vary greatly according to the time of year in which you are. For example, during the summer, the times you will have to water will be much greater than during the winter.

The reason is obvious, during the summer the earth tends to dry out quickly and stops being wet very easily. Very different than if you were in winter where the humidity can last a long time.

This is how during the summer, you should water at least three times a week and during the winter a maximum of two. Everything will depend on how the land is at the time of watering.
