Narcissus, a beautiful flower for your garden and flower pots

Narcissus is an impressive bulbous flower that is planted in the autumn and blooms in late winter or in spring. Originating from the Mediterranean, the narcissus has a rich bloom of beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers that pop out on thin stems through the narrow leaves. We can find it in a wide variety of colors from white, white to yellow, yellow-orange, reddish to pink. The narcissus is planted in rock gardens, in flower beds in the garden, even as an indoor plant, and is one of the most popular flowers for vase decoration in the winter. Let’s see in detail what care it takes to enjoy beautiful flowers that last a long time in our garden and balcony.

What conditions does the narcissus need to bloom?

Narcissus grows very easily in almost all soil types, but prefers well-drained soils. It needs a sunny or semi-lush environment to thrive while in the shade it does not bloom. The sunny places have the advantage of the semi-trees, since after flowering, the sunshine helps to bloom next year. The narcissus is planted from August to December and blooms occur in winter or spring depending on the variety and season of planting. The narcissus bulb is planted at a depth of about 10 cm and at distances of 10-15 cm between the bulbs. To plant the narcissus in a flowerpot, we use a generic mold and ensure good drainage by drilling holes in the bottom of the flowerpot to drain the water along with a layer of pebbles at its base.

Whenever does the narcissus need watering and lubrication?

Narcissus, like most bulbous plants, has moderate water needs, and excessive watering can cause bulb rot. Similar phenomena occur in very wet soils with poor drainage. On the ground, before planting narcissus bulbs, it is good to add compost and a little fertilizer. We re-fertilize immediately after the flowering is over to enhance the plant with nutrients for next year’s flowering. Once the narcissus flowers begin to bloom, it is advisable to keep the plants in a cool place away from direct contact with the sun. In this way, we significantly extend the flowering period of the narcissus.

How do we store narcissus bulbs?

To admire the beautiful narcissus flowers in our garden next year, we make sure to remove the bulbs from the ground and store them after flowering. The best time to remove narcissus bulbs from the soil is after its flowers and leaves dry up, about 1.5-2 months after flowering. We clean the bulbs from the soil, let them dry in a shady ventilated place, and then store them in paper boxes or pouches in a dark dry place for a few months, so we can plant them again in the fall.

The narcissus multiplies mainly with its bulbs. In late summer, we dilute the densely formed bulbs and plant them in different parts of our garden. Of course, narcissus is also propagated by seed that is freshly harvested during the summer and planted in pots in late summer or in the autumn.

And a secret about narcissism

The narcissus may be an impressive and attractive flower, but it hides toxic substances in almost all parts of the plant from bulb to flower. For this reason it is considered a dangerous plant for cats and a dangerous plant for dogs. It is therefore advisable to avoid planting in places where there are pets.
