What is insulation?

Good insulation can bring down noise pollution. Also, insulation keeps your house warm and protected against cold during winter and cold during summer. It helps you not to waste the energy you’re using, so you will need a very small amount of additional cooling or heating. There’s no doubt that you’ll save money, however, it depends on what type of insulation you use and how big your house is.

Also, the important factor is how old your house is to choose the right type of insulation. This is a smart investment and it’s going to pay back, even so, the process of planning is not complicated, as generally speaking, you don’t need planning permission. You may not have to worry if your house is new, as they are built with good insulation. However, older houses need to be improved and taken care of with higher insulation standards. If your walls are not insulated, you can lose up to 30-40% of the heat. Heat can go in every direction, through your windows, doors, floors, or roof. Heat is lost through the roof for about 25 percent and through windows and doors for approximately 20%. There are many options you can choose from to have your house energy efficient.

What is an insulator made of?

Usually, an insulator is made of a material like wool to trap air pockets. There are many different materials, like hemp and cotton, which act as heavy curtains and are a good choice for home insulation. Another option is spray foam which is polyurethane-based. It’s a good option for roof tiles, as it fills the gaps in between them. For doors and windows insulation, you can choose adhesive strips. Also, sealants are used to fill in cracks and gaps. Your house can stay warm by using wood-based products, like hardboards.

Types of Insulation

1. Roof insulation

If your loft is warm, you should insulate right under the roof. Less expensive is if you have a cold loft, where you insulate above the ceiling of the last floor.

2. Wall insulation

There are 2 types of walls, ones with the gap between the inner and outer leaf, or with no gap. If you have a cavity wall, an insulator is put in the wall through drilling holes and then filled with cement. For solid walls, you can either apply insulation on the facade of the house or to the inner rooms.

3. Floor insulation

First, you need to check if you really need this type of insulation, since it’s expensive. If you live in an older house, then it may need some improvement. Newer houses have insulators underneath the concrete floor. A much cheaper alternative is to place rugs all around the floors of your house.

4. Windows and door insulation

Always look for having at least two panels of glass in your windows. Double glazed windows and doors keep your home warm and block the noise from the outside.

The importance of good insulation is to keep the energy inside of your house, keep it warm or cold, depending on the season. Also, reduce the noise from the outside or throughout the house.
