When the temperature rises and the sun shines more hours, our desire to spend more of our time outdoors increases. But for the residents of the flats, the “outdoors” is often a small, shaded balcony located at the kitchen window of a neighbor.
The challenge is to convert this sometimes hostile place in a pleasant, friendly and personal one. Here are some ideas on how you too can achieve this:
The balcony should be another room of your house – do not turn it into a storage closet. Very often, the balconies are used as a warehouse for antique furniture, toys, chairs, and broken objects. Do not let it happen to yours! The balcony is your own lair, your outdoor dining room, your outdoor library. And how will this happen?
Start from the floor. The type of flooring you choose will have a major impact on the look of your balcony. White and colored tiles will give a modern look and at the same time the feeling that the balcony is a continuation of the inside of the house. They suit modern, high buildings and give an urban sensation to them. The terracotta tiles with “wild”, rough surface on the balcony will give a sense of warmth. The terracotta is particularly suited to buildings with Mediterranean influence and creates a natural feel. Wood flooring will add rustic style and rustic, naturalistic mood, and match both traditional and modern homes.
Buy patio furniture, but do not overdo it. Especially if you do not have a huge space and a large family, you should get simple things. A chair and a small bistro set is probably all you need. Invest in pieces that are foldable or stackable. If you have a long or wide balcony, you can divide it into sections using plants, and create a dining room, a living room or a reading area. Your goal in such a balcony, which is fully furnished, should be to move freely without dragging furniture around.
Carefully select the appropriate pots, they are the second major investment. The decoration of the balcony is what really makes a difference to improve the view and the desired shape of your space. Before you buy a plant, think about how you would like your balcony to look and feel and select appropriate pots for your plants. Oblong and low flower boxes are ideal to plant tall bushes and shrubs as a fence. Narrow window boxes at the windows are suitable to plant beautiful flowers, but they do not interfere with the surface. Colorful and sinle pots will give your balcony the view of casual sophistication. Choose pots with a single theme or color that will prevent the area of the balcony from being “Loaded”. Look for pots with strong sculptural shape to attract interest.
Decide on the right plants. If the challenge for you is a private protection and isolation, prefer low flower boxes of clay, sandstone or stone, planted with tall shrubs or conifers (such as sycamore) that will hide the view of your balcony from the street, but not your visibility of the outside world. If you are looking for more privacy, it is best to use trellis or pergola, where you can plant climbing plants that will get higher than the railing of the balcony. For a formal and traditional look, choose topiary. For a more modern look, prefer grasses, yucca and agave plants. If you want a lush tropical feel, the palm is the best way. And if you end up looking for color then use blooming shrubs. Also gardenia and jasmine add to the flavor.
Try something new. Certainly, the flowers and flower boxes are a beautiful and classic choice. But why not add a small garden with herbs, a little garden with vegetables or even a Zen rock garden? If planting in suitable containers, all these types of gardens can thrive on your balcony.
Add water. A fountain or a bird basin can turn a common balcony in a quiet, peaceful place, full of nature.
Particular element with sculptural additions. Those who have a balcony, rarely use the opportunity to use some sculpture, but if you think again, the balcony may be the perfect place for that. Look for heavier sculptures designed to withstand various weather conditions and wind. Enjoy it! In many parts of the country, you have only a few months to enjoy your balcony. So, use it as often as possible. With regular use many new, great ideas to improve your outdoor living space will arise .
